Better Culture

At Choice Bank, putting people first drives our decisions every day and influences how we treat our customers, colleagues, and community. We believe investing in and empowering our employees is critical to the ongoing success of our organization and our communities. Our #PeopleFirstApproach is built on four core values. Click each core value below to learn more.

Volunteerism

Choice Bank supports the organizations and causes our team members are passionate about. In 2020, our employees gave 5,032 hours of volunteer service. There are no limits on volunteer hours and Choice employees can volunteer during working hours. From delivering food to people in need, to educating youth on financial responsibility, to coaching community sports teams — our team members have a passion to better the places we live.

Wishing Well

Every day, people in our communities face challenges that go unseen. They may be our neighbors, our coworkers, or even our own family. Inspired by our #PeopleFirst philosophy, we launched the Wishing Well program to better the places we live by empowering individuals in our communities to send in wishes for those they see as most in need.

COVID-19 Response

Helping our customers succeed is our primary commitment. With many small businesses placed in uncertain situations because of COVID-19, this was no different. Through the SBA Payment Protection Program (PPP) and other special loan programs, we were able to help secure financing for more than 4,000 businesses, protecting more than 65,000 jobs in our communities.

The Thielen Foundation

One of our major stakeholders is our community and that’s why we’re in business. Built on a partnership of shared values that puts People First, we teamed up with Adam and Caitlin Thielen to support The Thielen Foundation and their mission of inspiring and educating youth in our communities.

Hospice

Hawaiian for Hospice was founded in Fargo, ND, in 2012 by Choice Bank in partnership with a local hospice care organization. This event has become a growing and key event for Choice Bank and the communities we live in. Over the last six years, we have raised over $750,000 and expanded our event into Bismarck, Dickinson, and Grand Forks to support Hospice’s mission.

The Premier Experience

Choice Bank’s Premier Experience guides employees to be empowered to rise up to new standards and expectations that present themselves each day. Choice employees are empowered to build relationships, inspire confidence, be sincere, and exceed expectations when serving our customers.

Championing Growth

One of the best elements of our culture is the ability to never stop growing, learning, leading, and mentoring. Choice Bank’s passionate and empowered employees attract future customers and deepen existing customer relationships by always putting people first, banking second. When we formed in 2001, total assets were $170 million. In 2021, assets were over $3 billion. That equates to 1765% growth over Choice’s 20-year history.

Strengths-Based Organization

Choice Bank is a strengths-based organization. Our organizational policies and practices are anchored in Clifton Strengths philosophies driven toward excellence through self-awareness and strengths-based development. With opportunities like Strengths Focus Groups, employees can pursue continued personal and professional development.

Performance Development

Choice employees also have weekly One-on-Ones with their supervisor to discuss growth opportunities and challenges, as well as collaborate on projects and solutions.

Connectivity through Technology

Choice utilizes video phones and video conferencing at all our locations, making it easier for team members to collaborate and build relationships across our growing organization.

Flat Organizational Structure

At Choice, everyone is a resource to everyone. Our flat organizational structure fosters communication between team members in varying positions and departments, encouraging quicker decision-making and well-informed solution development.

Coach vs. Boss Culture

Choice implements a coaching leadership style, which emphasizes worker’s needs, training, development, and motivation. We value the passions and motivations of our employees and strive to support their personal and professional growth.

Learning Opportunities

We believe in investing in the continued growth of our employees. That’s why we offer many opportunities for education and connection for employees. From book clubs to educational webinars and networking events, Choice wants to help you grow into the best person you can be.

Choice Champ Program

The Choice Champ program creates a welcoming experience for new team members. New hires are assigned a Choice Champ upon joining Choice Bank. Their Champ will share what it’s like to work at Choice, go over the how-tos of your role, and support all questions you may have in your first year at Choice and beyond.

Choice U

Choice University is our company cultural retreat that all team members attend when they join Choice. Team members get the chance to hear from members of our Executive Team, Board of Directors, and other leaders about why our #PeopleFirst culture stands apart. They learn firsthand about how our culture has propelled us forward, making a difference in our communities by keeping our focus on people.

Ignite

Ignite is our annual leadership retreat. During this event, team members hear from speakers, collaborate with one another, and even participate in a community volunteer event.

Rise Up! Recognition

Our employees do wonderful things every day and we want to recognize that. Team members submit a Rise Up when they notice a coworker embracing Choice’s #PeopleFirst values. Whether it’s going the extra mile to help a customer or providing your coworkers with some extra support, Rise Ups recognize the goodness of our empowered and passionate employees.

#PeopleFirst Universe

There’s not just one thing that makes Choice #PeopleFirst, it’s a whole universe of helping our customers, colleagues, and community. #PeopleFirst Universe is a platform that showcases the wonderful things that happen when our team members put People First.

Anniversary Party

Every year our team members come together for an evening of wining, dining, and fun at the annual Choice Anniversary Party. It’s a chance for our Choice family to connect and celebrate all our hard work and achievements throughout the year.

Choice Footprints

Choice Footprints is an annual peer-to-peer award and recognition program that provides an opportunity to highlight the achievements of top performers. Their efforts leave lasting footprints in Choice’s growth and prosperity.

Local Decision-Making

Accessibility and local decision-making remain at the core of our growth. We understand that in each of our markets our customers may have different needs and circumstances that need to be met. At Choice, we leave decision-making to individuals who know and live in your community, so we can best serve the needs of our customers.

Insights Internship

Getting Innovative with Intern Programming

When Choice Bank’s CEO, Brian Johnson, encouraged our team to develop an internship program, we took it as a challenge to build something great. We wanted to give our interns an unforgettable experience while preparing them for the workforce. We didn’t want to look at the program as “what can they do for us,” so instead, we asked ourselves, “What do we wish we had known as we prepared for our careers?”
